Cardboard Cutout Project Underway at Hempstead Stadium

The Gull faithful typically pack Hempstead Stadium during the fall sports season, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, a different group will be found in the bleachers.

Endicott’s Gull Club is urging the community to purchase cardboard cutouts of the college’s mascot, the Gull, to be in attendance at the stadium.

The fundraiser is called the “Pack the Stadium” initiative.

Despite teams not being able to compete against CCC foes and other competitive colleges, scrimmages and practices will still take place.

The cutouts are in place of the usual fans who would be in attendance.

Individual Gulls are currently on sale for $25, whereas a larger-sized family Gull is available for $100.

On top of the money to purchase a respective Gull, buyers are also able to add additional donations as well.

When purchasing a cutout, your money can support the general athletics fund-- or you can pick a specific team to contribute towards.

Buyers are also able to customize their Gull with a specific name, and can choose to either keep the cutout or give the Gull Club permission to keep it.

The college will send a photo of all of the cardboard Gulls in action so buyers will be able to see what their donation translated to.

Kelsey O’Keefe is the assistant director of Athletic Giving at Endicott. She said the project launched because even though CCC sports were cancelled, the student-athletes still need support and excitement as they continue on their athletic journeys.

“Athletics rely on annual fundraising to help provide the best possible athletic experience to our student-athletes,” O’Keefe said.

O’Keefe said she’s overwhelmed by the support from the community, and the level of excitement has been incredible.

“In terms of fundraising, the campaign has surpassed our expectations. We have raised over $30,000 for Endicott Athletics,” O’Keefe said.

Senior Cody Chalifoux is in the midst of his fourth year as an Endicott commentator, and said he’ll appreciate the project whenever he gets to call a scrimmage or other athletic event.

“I think it’s really neat. You see cutouts a lot in the pros, and it works,” Chalifoux said. “Just for the players to look up and see something shows that people still care.”

The final installation and video of the cutouts will be in early November. “Pack the Stadium” sales will end on Sunday, October 18.
